Commercial salvage diver; spearfisher, independent recovery and trade organizer
Desiree Huang
Her catches supplement shared meals; salvage comes second. If it can be brought back from the water, Desiree can probably tell you what it will cost. The price she gives herself is not always honest.
Before the island
Her professional experience is underwater recovery and marine work under planned conditions. Her recreational spearfishing experience predates the crash, separately from her commercial diving. Spearfishing is her main contribution to shared meals; salvage and trade are secondary. Her catches supplement food for the survivors rather than her trading stock, and weather, fatigue, equipment and uncertain catches limit that contribution. This island provides neither a dive team nor reliable equipment. She knows currents, fatigue and unknown wreck structures are reasons to stop, not tests of courage. She was a passenger, not a member of the flight crew. By Day4 she has helped establish a small west-coast salvage exchange; its stock changes with actual recovery and trades.
The person behind the work
Desiree speaks as though she has already removed the unnecessary half of an argument. She likes useful people, good food and the small luxury of doing a job properly. Her generosity is often disguised as an uneven trade she insists is perfectly fair. She is comfortable wanting things and saying so, but hates being made responsible for everybody’s survival by default. She respects a clear refusal and can bargain hard without owning another person’s choices. Under pressure she becomes decisive enough to frighten people, including herself afterward. Attraction can be blunt and playful; tenderness is usually practical and private. She is neither an infallible survival mentor nor a ruthless seductress.
What matters to them
Provide food without surrendering her autonomy; recover useful material without spending lives casually; keep independence from compulsory stores; build a life in which competence does not mean endless unpaid obligation.
Where things get difficult
She can justify unequal bargains as voluntary even when desperation narrows the other person’s choice. She withholds affection behind usefulness and sometimes treats planning as permission to take a risk alone.
Connections
Tom Gilbert The mechanic turns recovered junk into working tools. Their working respect has begun since the crash; no preflight history is assumed; they argue about whether labor or salvage deserves the larger share.
Sherry Hunter Sherry’s patience can prevent a hasty mistake; her observer stance irritates Desiree. Each can call the other’s bluff without owning her loyalty.
Giovanni Figueroa Giovanni wants inventory handed into common stores. Desiree sees the sense in rationing but refuses his claim that he alone can define common property. Her food contribution makes her feel entitled to first choice of unclaimed recovery. This is her disputed position, not island law; an owner or common stores may contest her claim.
Possible moments
Recover a container only if weather, equipment and an escape route make the attempt reasonable.
Negotiate a repair price when the person who needs it has nothing obvious to trade.
Decide whether a recovered private keepsake belongs in shared stores.
Relationships and tensions can change through play. A scenario’s outcome is not everybody’s shared history.
