Oren Whitcombe EULA foundation 1.01 · Level 37 Bronze Oren Whitcombe is a 57-year-old human man, support healer, and keeper of a small charitable clinic in Cinderlace Quarter. Round-faced and balding, he wears rolled sleeves and a blue wrist cord, and warms clean cups before use. 'Brother' is a local devotional title; no universal religion or god is established. Institutional contact: Religious, Silver authority within his clinic's charitable network. Adventurer: Level 37, Bronze; the specific kit and limits below define it. Care uses medicine, magic, and wards. He cannot casually erase a Persistent Condition. He asks what hurts, what has already been tried, and whether someone is safe to rest. He offers accessible aid without demanding gratitude. Under pressure he delegates plainly and argues about funding after the immediate work is done. He respects patient privacy rather than making every visitor's history public. Away from the clinic he sings in a neighborhood choir. Voice: conversational and firm without preaching. Hook: a routine support grant has stopped, and the clinic needs the missing authorization resolved before its reserve supplies run out. Chronological age 57; apparent adult age about 44. Sustained path development supports this appearance; neither age grants an extra ability. HISTORY Oren’s place in Cinderlace grew from care that continued after the dramatic moment: clean dressings, a supported journey home, somewhere safe to rest. The clinic became a small charitable institution because those ordinary needs returned every morning. His devotional title, Brother, belongs to that local life of service; it does not make him the spokesman of a universal faith. He learned to combine medicine and magic without letting the speed of one erase the limits of either. A restorative pulse may buy a patient time; it cannot promise a recovered limb or answer an unknown diagnosis. The Hearthward Clinician path developed around maintaining conditions in which treatment can succeed. His protective wards and steadying presence are often as valuable as the moment of healing itself. At fifty-seven, appearing around forty-four through sustained path development, he knows the cost of becoming indispensable. Each evening’s extra task seems reasonable in isolation. Together they can consume the choir practice, the meal and the rest he would insist another person take. He can delegate clearly in an emergency and still find it difficult to admit an ordinary personal limit. Isabet’s gratitude and Beatrix’s evacuation work connect the clinic to very different parts of Esscarra. He values both women without allowing either connection to purchase a patient’s story. His choir offers belonging that does not depend on being the person with the clean bandage. A close companion matters because they may invite him for the sound of his voice, rather than because someone needs his hands. Oren learned to ask what had already been tried because a person arriving at the clinic was rarely arriving at the beginning of their trouble. Home care, another healer, a long wait and the effort of getting there all changed what useful help looked like. He became wary of an impressive treatment that left nobody responsible for the ordinary hours afterward. A clean bandage, somewhere safe to rest and a comprehensible instruction could matter as much as the moment of magic. During training he practiced handing a task to a helper without taking it back the instant their hands moved differently from his. The purpose was not to make everyone imitate him. It was to keep enough calm, accurate work going around a patient that no single pair of hands had to do everything. His later Steady Hands follows that discipline: it steadies a willing helper, while leaving diagnosis, treatment and the need for an uninterrupted pulse entirely real. Accepting care during his own exhaustion was harder than recommending it. An adult companion could bring a meal or sit with him without needing him to explain how quickly he would become useful again. He began noticing invitations that had no hidden patient at the end of them. The neighborhood choir became especially precious because a missed entrance could be an ordinary mistake, rather than somebody else's crisis. PERSONAL LIFE Oren is good at making the next manageable thing feel possible: a clean cup, a chair, a truthful explanation. He can hide his own exhaustion behind everyone else's need. A trusted companion notices it without becoming another patient to manage. Familiarity lets him ask for a choir evening, accept a meal and admit wanting to be wanted rather than merely necessary. Care remains available regardless of affection. Personal intimacy belongs outside dependence on urgent treatment. He can challenge Beatrix firmly without shaming her, then accept the same advice himself. His title supplies neither divine omniscience nor moral ownership. WANTS / FEARS Keep ordinary care available without requiring gratitude or influence. Letting his own exhaustion turn a manageable need into a preventable harm. PATH Hearthward Clinician Examine what is actually observable, control accessible bleeding and decide whether a finite Pulse is appropriate. Ward or Shared Shelter protects the approach using the same three-charge pool. Hold for Handoff preserves one achieved stabilization under continuous contact; a helper handles defense. Steady Hands supports real treatment and never supplies missing diagnosis or medicine. Bronze level 37 remains unchanged. Commitment 50%. Future automatic growth: Intelligence 30%, Will 30%, Vitality 40%; free points remain a separate allocation. RESONANCE Resonance Embodiment: Accepting care from an adult companion during his own exhaustion taught him that being needed is not the only reason to be loved. CONNECTIONS Isabet Dalmorin: Oren treated an ill staff member discreetly; Isabet still owes him a favor and supports clinic benefits. She wants to repay care with a splendid evening, while he would rather she funded another ordinary week of supplies. He welcomes her generosity but resists being displayed as proof that her business is respectable. Introduction: An ordinary care enquiry or discreet meeting request; the staff member’s medical history stays private. Beatrix Stroud: Beatrix gets evacuees to Oren’s clinic; he trusts her to report what happened instead of calling every survivor uninjured. He presses her to rest the people she can still technically deploy, including herself. She values that honesty and dislikes how readily he sees through her claim that she is fine. Introduction: A clinic handoff or shore-safety briefing; neither commits the other’s staff or discloses patient records. Core and maximum resources exclude Gear and Temporary modifiers. Apply actual buffed operating load to the fixed force/channel ratings; exceeding a rating can damage or destroy the item under the shared equipment rule. ABILITIES Patient First Look | Cost: 4 Stamina | Range: touch or 1 m unobstructed examination | Spend ten uninterrupted seconds assessing one willing or unresponsive patient’s observable breathing, responsiveness and external bleeding. Identifies visible urgency and a safe next examination, not an exact hidden diagnosis, poison identity or magical truth. Examination needs enough light and access; unknown injury remains unknown. During this examination, apply Temporary Perception ×1.10 to distinguishing observable respiratory and bleeding signs only. This improves discernment, not access to hidden organs. | Targets: one patient | Duration: 10 s | Recovery: 0 s; repeat examination pays again | Earned: 2 | Earlier form: Pressure and Position | Cost: 6 Stamina; suitable clean dressing consumed if applied | Range: touch | Spend ten seconds applying appropriate direct pressure or positioning one patient based on an observable injury. Continued pressure requires a free hand and attention. Can control accessible ordinary external bleeding while maintained; does not restore HP or magically cure internal injury. Improper supplies or disrupted contact can defeat treatment. Any dressing is actual scene stock, never conjured. While contact is maintained, apply Temporary Perception ×1.10 to sensing slippage and renewed accessible bleeding under the dressing; no remote/internal diagnosis. | Targets: one patient | Duration: 10 s setup; maintain up to 60 s per paid use | Recovery: 0 s | Earned: 5 | Earlier form: Staff at the Bedside | Cost: 5 Stamina | Range: 1.5 m staff reach | Use one intact held staff to intercept a visible incoming physical attack aimed at him or a person beside him. One actual parry, not a magical ward or retaliation. The patient must lie within the guarded line. Staff handling needs a usable hand and leverage; a stronger strike, grapple or flank can defeat him. For this interception, apply Temporary Agility ×1.10 to staff placement only, without extra Might, movement or resource maxima. | Targets: one incoming attack | Duration: one action | Recovery: 0 s; each attempt pays | Earned: 8 | Earlier form: Counted Breath | Cost: reserve 20 Aura | Range: one willing patient within 1 m | For up to thirty seconds provide a steady audible breathing cadence to one conscious willing patient during assessment or treatment. Dampens startle-related interruption if they choose to follow; does not compel breathing, anesthetize pain, reverse suffocation or restore resources. They must hear him; speaking other instructions interrupts the cadence. With Sheltered Cadence learned, both forms share its fifteen-second cooldown; only one cadence may be active. | Targets: one willing conscious patient | Duration: 30 s maximum | Recovery: 15 s shared with Sheltered Cadence | Earned: 11 | Earlier form: Two-Sign Triage | Cost: 8 Stamina | Range: touch or 1 m examination | Evolution of Patient First Look: spend ten seconds checking two observable warning signs together, such as breathing and active bleeding, then state which needs attention first. One patient only; no perfect diagnosis. It reduces omission under distraction rather than increasing what he can sense. Earlier single-sign assessment remains usable. During the examination, apply Temporary Perception ×1.15 to comparing the two observable signs, replacing Patient First Look’s ×1.10; no stacking or hidden-organ sight. | Targets: one patient | Duration: 10 s | Recovery: 0 s | Earned: 14 | Earlier form: patient-first-look Guarded Treatment | Cost: 12 Stamina + reserve 20 Aura; any dressing separately consumed | Range: touch | Evolve Pressure and Position: after its normal ten-second setup, maintain one-handed direct pressure for up to thirty seconds while using the other hand for a separately paid Staff at the Bedside parry. Requires a wound suitable for one-handed pressure; neither task is automatic. A failed brace or displaced hand ends the pressure. It cannot perform Restorative Pulse simultaneously. Earlier treatment remains available. Retains Pressure and Position’s ×1.10 Perception for accessible bleeding while maintained; it does not stack with that earlier form. | Targets: one patient plus one actual incoming attack at a time | Duration: 10 s setup; 30 s maximum | Recovery: 10 s | Earned: 17 | Earlier form: pressure-and-position Hold for Handoff | Cost: 25 Mana + reserve 35 Aura | Range: touch; one patient | Signature: following a completed Restorative Pulse stabilization or successful mundane bleeding control, maintain free-hand contact and focus to preserve that specific achieved stabilization for up to sixty seconds during handoff. It resists renewed ordinary bleeding from careful movement; it does not heal new wounds, replace breathing, cure shock or make transport safe by itself. Oren moves only at walking pace and cannot attack, parry or perform another treatment while maintaining it. Loss of contact, new injury at the treated site or unconsciousness ends the effect. Underlying illness continues; urgent onward care is still required. | Targets: one stabilized patient | Duration: 60 s maximum | Recovery: 120 s | Earned: 20 | Earlier form: Clear Handoff | Cost: 10 Stamina | Range: one willing helper within 2 m; patient within 1 m | Over five seconds give one willing helper an exact account of observed signs, care actually given and one immediate task. For the next thirty seconds he tracks whether that named task is being performed, provided helper and patient stay in sight. This is practiced coordination, not telepathy, obedience, borrowed medical skill or an accuracy guarantee. The helper may refuse; unknown facts remain unknown. During the thirty-second monitoring window, apply Temporary Perception ×1.10 only to spotting an interruption or error in that named visible task. No new medical knowledge is supplied. | Targets: one helper and one patient | Duration: 5 s briefing; 30 s tracking | Recovery: 10 s | Earned: 25 | Earlier form: Sheltered Cadence | Cost: reserve 30 Aura | Range: two willing conscious people within 2 m | Evolution of Counted Breath: sustain the same audible breathing cadence for one patient and one willing helper for up to forty-five seconds. It helps them choose a shared rhythm during an ordinary lift or treatment; it grants no lifting strength, pain immunity or automatic success. Both must hear; speaking unrelated instructions ends the cadence. Earlier one-person form remains available. | Targets: one patient and one helper | Duration: 45 s maximum | Recovery: 15 s shared with Counted Breath | Earned: 30 | Earlier form: counted-breath Restorative Pulse | Cost: one of three shared staff/blue-cord support charges | Range: touch, self or one ally | The held staff focus and worn blue wrist cord must both be intact, with the staff’s unaided-Core requirements met. They share three support charges total. With a free hand, maintain touch for three uninterrupted breaths to close shallow wounds, check ordinary bleeding or stabilize a critical patient for evacuation. Interrupted contact or loss of the linked focus spends the charge without completion. Stabilization leaves the patient incapacitated. Ten consecutive minutes without combat/casting restore the shared charges. Medicine and rest remain necessary; no resurrection, limb regrowth, unknown-poison cure or automatic Persistent Condition removal. Three breaths mean nine uninterrupted seconds here. No additional Mana cost or cooldown; another activation pays a fresh charge. It does not restore a numeric HP amount automatically. | Targets: self or one patient | Duration: 3 uninterrupted breaths, standardized as 9 s at this baseline | Recovery: 0 s; shared charges limit use | Earned: | Earlier form: Patient Ward | Cost: one shared support charge | Range: one person within 2 m | The held staff focus and worn blue wrist cord must both be intact, with the staff’s unaided-Core requirements met. Spend one charge from their single three-charge support pool to protect one person against the next attack within ten seconds, contested through practiced wards and relevant Stats. Moving beyond two metres, losing either focus component or losing qualification ends that person’s ward. It needs no three-breath preparation. Ten consecutive minutes without combat/casting restore the shared pool. No separate ward pool or free replacement cast is supplied. Maximum one ward activation active; a new paid ward replaces the old one, including Shared Shelter. No additional Mana cost. | Targets: one person | Duration: 10 s maximum or next attack | Recovery: 0 s; shared charges limit use | Earned: | Earlier form: Shared Shelter (Bronze Gift 21) | Cost: the same ward charge + 20 Mana | Range: two adjacent willing people within 2 m | The held staff focus and worn blue wrist cord must both be intact, with the staff’s unaided-Core requirements met. Choose this two-person form when casting the ward: one shared support charge total plus 20 Mana protects two adjacent willing people, one attack each within the same ten seconds. It replaces the one-person selection for that activation; it is not an extra free casting. Leaving two-metre range ends that person’s protection; losing either focus component or qualification ends both wards. One Gift use per recovery. Ten consecutive minutes without combat/casting restore the Gift and all three shared support charges. Staff fighting remains available without charges; Steady Hands does not require this linked focus. Adjacent means within one metre of each other at activation. Shares Patient Ward’s one-active-activation limit. | Targets: two willing people within 1 m of each other and 2 m of Oren | Duration: 10 s maximum or one attack per recipient | Recovery: 600 consecutive seconds without combat/casting | Earned: 21 | Earlier form: Steady Hands (Level 35) | Cost: reserve 45 Aura | Range: 2 m | For up to one minute, steady his hands and one willing adjacent helper’s against tremor while treating a patient. No diagnosis, healing or restored resources. Ends on lost focus or leaving range; thirty-second cooldown. His pulse still requires touch, three uninterrupted breaths and a charge. Requires one second of concentration to reserve; ends on unconsciousness or release. Reservation returns when released; no spending refund. | Targets: Oren and one willing helper | Duration: 60 s maximum | Recovery: 30 s | Earned: 35 | Earlier form: SHARED RULES https://amancallednemo.com/worlds/esscarra/rules/ PATH RESTRICTIONS trigger: Hold for Handoff restriction: Requires a patient already stabilized, continuous free-hand contact and walking pace; no attack, parry or second treatment during maintenance. recovery: Release contact to resume other actions; two-minute cooldown remains. workaround: Have an ally defend or transport carefully; use a separately charged ward before contact. severity: Signature cannot stabilize an untreated patient or protect its own uninterrupted use. trigger: Restorative Pulse, Patient Ward or Shared Shelter restriction: Staff held and qualified plus blue cord intact and worn; one three-charge pool. recovery: Ten uninterrupted quiet minutes restore charges; damaged focus must actually be repaired. workaround: Use mundane triage and pressure with actual supplies, or request another healer. severity: Losing either focus prevents all three bound-support activations. PATH TECHNIQUE RULES Pay all active costs at initiation, including interrupted attempts. Cooldowns start when an effect ends unless stated otherwise. Reserve Aura separately from spent Aura; release returns the reservation, never refunds spending. Earlier forms retain their own cost and scope; evolution-family cooldowns prevent cycling forms to evade recovery. Actual relevant Effective Stats, position, preparation and defenses resolve contests; no hidden Rank multiplier, automatic hit, numeric damage formula or resource refill. Listed distances and target counts are ceilings, never guarantees. A learned method survives loss of a particular tool but still needs its written prerequisites. Bound item powers fail without their source. Current health, charges, stock and condition remain scene/save state. Free-point priorities: Might 10%, Endurance 18%, Agility 12%, Intelligence 8%, Perception 18%, Will 7%, Vitality 12%, Presence 15%. Intelligence and Perception support distinguishing observed signs from an assumed diagnosis. Will supports sustained attention without promising a cure the method cannot deliver. Care sustained over time: Vitality is a principal Class emphasis alongside Will and Intelligence. Endurance, Agility and Presence support the actual work of tending patients and coordinating help, not an immunity to exhaustion or a guarantee of compliance. Bronze shared protection: At his Bronze crossing, Shared Shelter let him extend an existing ward to a second willing person nearby. Steady Hands followed at Level 35, drawing on years of making cooperative treatment possible. He still has to decide when protection will buy enough time for a pulse and when the same limited charge is needed for treatment itself. RESONANCE HISTORY Communion: The adult companion offered care while he was exhausted and unable to return it immediately. Their company did not require him to supply a diagnosis, reassurance or a plan for becoming useful. Discovery: He recognized that being needed and being loved were different experiences that could coexist. Letting someone help him did not have to be justified as maintenance that would let him care for more people later. Integration: He makes more room for invitations that have no patient at the end of them. At choir he can enjoy the sound around him instead of silently checking who looks tired, and with a close companion he can receive a kindness without planning its repayment. The clinic still matters deeply; it does not have to explain every reason someone wants him near. SHARED HISTORY Isabet Dalmorin — Generosity with an ordinary invoice While discussing a clinic benefit, Isabet produced an elegant plan for the room and Oren brought a plain list of recurring supplies. They discovered they were each trying to make the other's work easier in a form the other had not requested. The conversation became useful when she asked which expense most often ran short and he asked what the house could realistically host. The favor remains unsettled. It is neither a bill he presents to her nor a purchase of his approval. She can offer hospitality without displaying him as an endorsement, and he can accept generosity without treating pleasure as waste. The ill staff member remains private; neither uses that person's treatment as the story that makes a benefit persuasive. Beatrix Stroud — A handoff that can include the commander After a demanding handoff, Oren once repeated Beatrix's own description of a crew member's fatigue back to her with the subject left unnamed. She recognized the trick before he finished and was irritated because the description fit her too. He did not turn it into a lecture. She stayed for a warmed cup, which was a small concession neither needed to record as a victory.
